Whiskey music
February 1994. I was deployed to northern Japan. It was a cold rainy day just like this one, I was homesick. And I was in trouble. My depression had become debilitating, I was being sent home from the squadron to begin medical separation from the Navy. And even though I had friends there, I was paranoid, anxious, lonely.
I walked into a bar/restaurant located on the base and Bonnie Raitt was playing on the stereo. It was a soulful, bluesy song, full of heartache and longing and empty whiskey glasses. It was sweet music to my ears. For just a moment, I was back home. Gone was the sickness; gone were the fears and the crippling anxiety. I was just a normal girl in a local pub looking for something to eat on a cold afternoon.
